2. Paniolo Adventures at the Makawao Rodeo
In Hawaii, cowboys are known as "Paniolo." Makawao, a charming town in the upcountry region of Maui, has become the hub for all things Paniolo. While many visitors think of Hawaii as purely a tropical paradise, cowboy culture has been a significant part of Hawaiian history since the late 1700s. This tradition began when Captain George Vancouver gifted the first cattle to the islands. Due to Hawaiian customs at the time, the cattle were not used for meat or supplies and quickly multiplied, leading to the need for herding and the rise of the Paniolo tradition. Every year in July, Makawao celebrates Paniolo culture with an elaborate parade and festive rodeo events, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the unique blend of Hawaiian and cowboy heritage. Tickets to the Makawao Rodeo can be found here.
